• Science at Pinewood is fundamentally a practical part of the curriculum that enables our children to make sense of the world around them through exploration, investigation and discovery. Through ‘hands-on’ and meaningful experiences, we seek to develop the key scientific skills of observation, questioning, exploration and investigation whilst preparing our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world. We encourage our children to be curious and ask questions.

  Science activities are carefully planned following Development Matters in the Early Years and the National Curriculum in KS1 with the children developing an awareness of the importance of science in everyday life. Meaningful links are made to other curriculum areas where appropriate. During the year we also have a Science after school club for children in Key Stage 1.

  As a recognised eco-school we use our school grounds to support children in fostering a love and respect for the natural environment. The children at Pinewood are continually involved in the planting and harvesting of fruit and vegetables and the growing of a range of plants and flowers is also a key part of school life. We are also lucky to have a school pond which provides us with great science learning opportunities.

  Regular local visits contribute enormously to our children’s love of science in school. We Adopt-a-Tree at our local woodland and walk here each season to observe the changes. We also experience life-cycles first hand with chicks, ducklings and caterpillars arriving in school as well as using our fantastic school pond to observing changes throughout the lifecycle of frogs.

  The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics

Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them

Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
